Acorns for Winter

If we take a cue from nature, now is a time for gathering and preparing for what lies ahead.

Let’s talk about why thats good for squirrels and yogis alike…

Everyday as the girls and I walk to school we stop and watch as the squirrels busily gather nuts in the park. They are clearly preparing for something. Gathering what they will need to get them through the winter. All of nature is doing just that.

Why should we be any different? We’re not. Try as our modern lives may to make us forget- we are just beings in the circle of life like all other animals and if they are preparing for winter shouldn’t we be as well? What exactly are they doing and why and what does that have to do with your yoga practice? Lets discuss!

Let’s start with what exactly are they doing- they’re gathering supplies for the winter ahead- why? Because they know that resources will be scarce and they are following the built in drive to have enough back up to get them through until resources replenish in the spring.

You my friend are about to go into a similar winter experience and need to prepare as well. You may not be looking to back stock your nest full of acorns but you will need an energy reserve for what lies ahead.

Having just settled into the pattern of fall these are the weeks that we too should be following our instinct to prepare for the winter ahead. First the holidays come- and we know that those always end up throwing us off and asking a lot of our mental load, even if its mostly joyful, its a lot and right after that we plunge into the depths of winter which can drain us of the magic of the light and energy we get from being able to be really outdoors.

So what to do?! Really, how do we take what we talked about yesterday and build it into a routine that works for us?

We make like the squirrels and we PREPARE! Put your Self on the list, literally on the schedule NOW. Book your movement in, your therapy in, your time off, your time out, whatever it is- let YOU be the first thing on your calendar so that you fill in everything else around it! Not what usually happens which is we start saying “yes” to things and assume there will be space left when the time comes to find space to nourish ourselves- there won’t be! Store your yogi soul food now.

So here is my challenge to you….

Make like the squirrels and prepare for the winter ahead- now! In this moment before holiday and end of year plans start to mount- commit to something for you and block the time off your calendar now.
